You never did describe what his house looks like? I've had my life ruined because of hoarding! If he is a hoarder his apt or house is full of stuff, with just little paths to walk,and he's constantly buying things,or bringing used things, into the house. Hoarder's aren't usually lazy, unless depresses , and do make an effort to clean but get overwhelmed because the job is SO BIG.What is it that you worry about? Take care!

First of all lets just assume it is a hoarding disorder because that is what it seems like from your description. There is a chance you are correct that he just feels hopeless. There is also a chance that he is just comfortable with his lifestyle no matter what the rest of the world thinks. Remember, hoarding can be a very complex disorder so to properly treat it, you have to treat all the underlying issues as well as seek the proper type of therapy (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). He is seing a psychiatrist, but what about a psychologist? He MUST want to change, or he simply isn't going to and if it honestly bothers you that much then you have a decision to make...accept it and enjoy his friendship or move on. The stress this type of relationship puts on both parties will be incredible and will probably self destruc soon enough anyway.
