I know this is going to sound totally rediculas but I have 2 sisters and a mother who hoard everything! Mostly trash their houses are awful the smell is horrible. They have an excuse for everything. My mother moved from her home to stay with my younger sister when she had her son 7 months ago? But really I think she left because she spends money on things she wouldn't need if her house were clean heaters, new clothes etc. My mothers house is totally unlivable period. My sister has a young son, dogs, one should be put down but my sister cant let go of him, they don't throw trash out or take dogs out. My other sister also has animals and children neither are in regular schools they homeschool my older sister is handicap and its hard for her to clean nobody will help. I've went and helped but I have my own family as well and it just gets old. My dad has helped with my moms house we went thru with snow shovels and done the outside. Its all sooooo horrible. What the heck do I do? My mom would claim not to be a hoarder of trash and my sisters that one is handicap and nobody will help and the other works too much and also hurts in the hips from a car accident we were in. My mom is not in great health my sisters either. My dad and mom are still married he drives truck when he comes home he goes to my grandmothers to stay or just stays in the truck. He is as at wits end as I am.. Help | |

Hi Jeni, Your situation sounds very hard, I am so sorry that you have to deal with that. This is just my opinion but I don't think you're going to be able to help them very much. Maybe with a little cleaning now and then but as for things changing that's going to take a long time. All hoarders struggle with change. It might be best for you to concentrate on your own family ~ husband, kids, house. That's an area you can have some control over. Keep your immediate family's environment as tidy and clean as possible. You'll feel good knowing you are handling things well in your own home. If you want to set aside a few hours or a day every week to help your mom or sisters with some chores that are difficult for them you could do that. But realize that the really hard work of changing how they live is up to them. To understand hoarding behavior check out some sites online. You'll have to learn also how to love them from a distance and let go of any guilt you feel. all the best ~~ | |
