Our family is falling apart over my mother in law's hoarding. Her three sons, one of whom is my husband, are the only ones who live close to her since her other two daughters are out of state. We have tried so many things over the years to try to help her-clean her house, meet with the family pastor, family agreements and meetings. Non of these have been long term solutions-the house always goes back to its original state. My husband's two brothers have recently gone in to "purge" since her landlord is close to eviting her. My husband has gone to help too, but he is trying to take a more gentle aproach based on what he has researched about how to deal with this illness-my husband and I talk and talk about this-it is the main focus of our lives-we love her so much but we do not know what to do or where to turn. She is 76 and does not want to change. Can you offer any advice? My husband and his siblings are at odds with each other on how to proceed. We want a family meeting and they scare thier mom by saying they want to throw everything away and going into her house when she is not there. Thank you for listening-the one comfort is seeing that so many people suffer with theis problem-thank you! | |
