Hi :)

I have absolutely no idea what to tell you.
A great book for you to read is
"Digging Out".
It's for people who know a hoarder.
I would direct your son to a website called
"Children Of Hoarders".
At 16 years old most all custody courts allow the child to decide which parent they want to live with, if that is an option.
One worry is that some children of hoarders become hoarders themselves
and some leave home and never again have any relationship with their hoarding parent.
You can't do anything to change your hoarding Ex until/unless she wants help,
but you should try everything possible to help your son learn how to overcome growing up in a hoarded home.

Sorry that I can't be of more help to you.
Good Luck and best wishes.

One of the reasons why my wife and I divorced was I suspected she had a hoarding problem. We've been divorced a few years now and, from what I can tell, the situation has not improved. It was difficult to walk through the house before and now, it's even worse.

This wouldn't be an issue (we're divorced, she's free to do as she pleases) except that my 16 year old son still lives there. I know he's on the verge of adulthood, but I still don't want him living in a potentially dangerous household.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Any "best practices" or any steps to take?

Thanks in advance for your help.
