Maybe someone can give some advice??? We are trying to push an elderly family member along with cleaning out his inhabitable house.we have been working on this home for months now & barely put a dent in the task.he lives elsewhere in a house that needs to b sold due to the death of the owner who passed over a year ago! The estate needs to be settled & we are trying to get him back into his home which I think is now impossible. At age 81, he is allowing us to go through some things & trash the junk. However, he insists on being there. we are at our wits end because this is taking forever.it is potentially a hazard & the fact that he realizes his problem is a step in the right direction...but it needs to be done fast. Almost a year now!! I see this is a disease but we don't know how to finally get this done without causing any animosity or arguing...any suggestions at all are appreciated! | |

Hi Jenn, Clearing out a hoarded house yourself (with family help) can easily take over a year. Especially when the hoarder is supervising. You could check out the links here and try to find a company that can do the work faster. When you get his house clear will it be usable? Heat, appliances, bathroom? At 81 will he be able to function by himself or will he be able to build a hoard again? I hope he is grateful for your help and that there will be no arguments or animosity. But considering the time crunch you are under and the slow rate he is going now there are probably going to have to be measures taken that will cause him a lot of stress. Is it possible for him to move in with a family member or assisted living until his home is clear and functional? Although that is another whole set of responsibilities it would give everyone more time for the transition. It may be helpful for you to read the threads here and post your stress out. It's very kind of you to be committed to helping him. Best of luck to you ~~ | |
