I am not a true hoarder in the sense that I collect things that I think have value. I am simply afraid to throw anything away because I think it will result in me losing something. I am terrified I will throw something away in error. I have OCD in the sense that I'm a "checker" and I obsess about things. And because my fear of losing or leaving something behind is so great, I have become scared to throw away even trash because I think I am throwing away something valuable by mistake.

Hello, I too struggle with being afraid of throwing out something valuable by mistake.

Before it has gotten so bad that if I was responsible for taking out the garbage that week, I would pause and instead, being so worried that I would be discarding something valuable, not put the garbage out. Instead I wouldn't and would say "well I just want to check it first".
Only half the time would I actually check it and maybe once was there something that I actually needed to keep.

Missing the garbage has put strain on my sister. Now that she has started doing it I don't experience this fear nearly as much. But, in doing so I know that I am avoiding the problem.

Hello 🙂

So you always doubt yourself about even the smallest or simplest of decisions.
Have you ever considered getting some professional help?
I believe that a doctor or therapist could help you overcome this fear you have.
Good luck and best wishes 🙂
