This is Cory's website so of course he is the expert. I look forward to his new publication(s).

I think the main key in working with a hoarder (once you have read up and checked online for information and stories), is to approach a hoarder on a nonjudgmental, friendly basis. Many do not recognize that they are even hoarders, and some use any other word rather than "hoarder," rather than label themselves, regardless of what they hoard. The goal is to eventually get a hoarder to have some awareness that there is a problem, and have the hoarder become open to taking some initial steps.

It's a slow and laborious process, including quite hard physical labor. Further, most hoarders end up isolating themselves from other people more and more.

Hi Guys,
We have come out with a workbook for loved ones of hoarders. It was created by CBT Therapists, and I helped them with the input on several areas of this workbook. It will include a book, a workbook, audio book and a DVD interview with myself on some of my insight into helping someone with this disorder. It should be out within a couple of days! I will post how to purchase it on this site as soon as it is available. This should really help people with not only helping a loved one, but truly understanding the disorder. More to come soon so check back often :)

Read and learn everything you can find about the subject, written by the experts who work in the field.
Take the time to meet, talk to and listen to as many people who hoard as possible.
They are all pretty amazing and interesting people.
When you truly understand, then you can begin to help without doing any harm.
