Bitsy, as we age the winters are definitely longer, harder, colder, bleaker and I do a lot of reading too. I still haven't adjusted to the early darkness and am ready for bed by 6:00 pm most every night. Since I know that would mean 14 hours of tossing and turning it's comforting to get under the blankets and read for hours. I'm a fan of real books. Amazon loves me.
I had heard about the monarchs and bees but not the starfish. I already feel sad for my grandchildren at what they have missed by living in this age probably the same way my parents and grandparents felt for the younger generations.
That's great news about the eagles though! I saw their massive nests occasionally but I just saw my first eagle in flight several weeks ago. It was glorious!
The reemergence of another species excites me also ~ bison! As a child I thought they were extinct. In my early twenties I was hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains and came into a panoramic view of the Shenandoah Valley. On some of the slopes were a herd of bison! I swear it was like that scene in the Jurassic Park movie where the guy looks up and sees the dinosaurs for the first time. I felt like I fell thru some time warp and there were all these magnificent creatures grazing peacefully. Obviously they weren't extinct!
Since then I've been able to observe them up close. There is a beautiful bison farm on the eastern coast. I took my father there when he was pretty old. Being a huge nature lover he was so delighted!
Thanks for the eagle link, I'll check that out. :)
