Hi Deborah :)
I sleep in the livingroom too on a couch "hide-a-bed".
Every day I have to fold up my bedding and return the area into the livingroom.
There is a very small room that I decluttered all his stuff out of and that is now my room where I keep my clothes and things, but it's too small for a bed.
He had a very slow growing undiagnosed brain tumor that started him hoarding.
Mainly it caused the centers of his brain where logical decisions are made to malfunction.
He now just keeps everything believing it's somehow important/valuable to have.
Because of the squalor in his bedroom attracting insects and rodents I have resorted to spraying bug barrier around the doorway.
Once a mouse ventured out from there and my brave kitty immediately killed it then woke me up to show me his prize.
We have to choose our battles carefully. Only one at a time and then wait to do more at a later date.
I am very glad that you have been reclaiming parts of the house for yourself.
That is the only way I know of to maintain our sanity.
Unfortunately, the needed house repairs are something here that I see now will never happen in my lifetime unless "Habitat For Humanity" steps in when I am very old and living at poverty level.
I really hope you can have your husband evaluated for possible dementia because there may be help for you there.
(((hug)))

Believe me, I have reclaimed most of my house, but I don't like sleeping in my living room, but don't have much choice. I will not will in my bedroom because of the mice, spiders and roaches. When I told him that he had roaches in the bed with him and asked him to clean the room he told me he would think about it. To make things worse I am seeing signs of dementia and that makes things much worse. I know that I am not the only one going through these problems, but it is hard knowing that I have to deal with this by myself.
I have God and have a great pastor that is giving me the strength to help me deal with all of this. I know that it is a daily fight with him and it gets hard at times. I just don't like not having my house repaired, because I know that the problems dealing with the house will only get worse.

Hi Deborah :)

Your story is so much like mine (((HUGS)))

Unfortunately for us, they will never change unless they want to change and they are content with things as they are.
A good book to read is "Digging Out".
I did declutter this very small house all except his bedroom.
Every day I must defend this clear clean space or he will slowly start to fill it up again.
This house has a lot of things that need repair too that is not getting done.
Try to make a nice space for you to live in your home. You need a space to sleep, keep your clothes, bathe and prepare food.
Please start to slowly reclaim your own spaces.

My husband is a hoarder. It started outside and now it has been moved in the house for several years now. I have tried to keep it limited to the bedroom. He will not give up anything, I can prove it, as it stands there are 2 mobile trailers that he / we use to live in the are packed, 2 school buses, a trailer, not counting junk cars and vans that have his clutter in it. He doesn't want to sell anything, the reasons I get are, " I might need to fix something, I will fix it later, or I am keeping it because it fit something that we have" and many other excuses. I need some help, my house has leaks and my bathroom that has a big hole in the ceiling and there are other problems with my house. If I could get him to sell some of the stuff(junk) that he has, we could get our house fixed. I know that he has other medical issues that I know he has, but it seems like all he really cares about is bring more in. He seems like that he can live like he is living with no problem. I have not slept in my own bed going on 5 years now. I need help with him anyone has any suggestions.
