It is hard to watch people living with the hoarding disorder.
A good book to read is "Digging Out". I also got a lot of insight into the disorder by reading "Buried In Treasures".

I have witness hoarding at various times in my life. In my 20's when my mother became terminally ill. She was very OCD and I know that condition co-exists with hoarding. My mother liked to keep everything very tidy and sterile but when she had bouts of anxiety she would hoard stuff. My brother is the same way. Growing up he was very anal-retentive but he had bouts of depression and he also sank into the hoarding behavior. My sister has always been messy but very exacting and detail oriented and a germaphobe she also battle with hoarding. I have know two family friends that exhibit similar to varying degrees. What the common denominator seems to be is that they all grew up with scarcity so they save and buy everything in sight much like a small animal foraging food for the winter. Having been exposed to all these people and having been exposed to clean-freaks and nominally normal folks I am very pained to see my siblings living with this condition.
